Yemi Alade’s short film is informative. Yemi Alade recently released a short film for her song, ‘ Home’ and it is romantic, entertaining and informative all at the same time. She featured Clarion Chukwura & Frankincense Eche-Ben as Mama Aba (her guardian/grandmother) and her love interest, Austine respectively. While we enjoyed this joint production with Clarence Peters, we also learned a few things.
Here are 3 things we learned from the short film:
1. Fight for love against all odds : Nneka (Yemi Alade) knew she had quite a lot to lose if she decided to run away from home with her lover but she still decided to. Austine, Nneka’s lover was abandoned by the taxi driver that was supposed to take them away from their village but he still came back for her. Despite having to wait past the set time for them to abscond together, Austine stood firm in his decision to wait for Nneka.
2. Love Makes Life More Bearable : Nneka was woken up from sleep and beaten by an angry, screaming woman who was supposed to love her, yet, the thought of her lover helped to brighten her rather horrible day. She experienced joy from knowing that someone out there loved her and it showed in her dancing and smiles, even while she was being berated by Mama Aba.
3. Rape hurts more than just the victim : The major sufferers of rape are the victims, the people who actually have to go through such animalistic acts carried out on them. However, the people around them also experience a lot of pain too. In the film, Mama Aba appeared to be in a lot of pain as she was reminded that her husband had raped her daughter leading to the birth of Nneka. That rape incident had affected the life of Aba (the victim), Mama Aba (her mother) and Nneka (the child from the rape).
While these lessons may seem like everyday life lessons, they are issues we need to constantly remind ourselves about. It is important to fight for someone you love, just as much as it is to know that you are loved.
